Fergusson College, Pune, was established in 1885 by the Deccan Education Society, founded by visionary leaders including Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Gopal Ganesh Agarkar. Its establishment came during a period of India’s educational renaissance, following the 1857 uprising, when it became clear that education would play a central role in the country’s social and national development. The college initially conducted classes at temporary locations in Pune, such as the old Gadre Wada. In 1891, the society acquired a 37-acre plot on a 99-year lease for the present campus.
